Two pairs of gold hoops can look identical in a photo and differ by a factor of ten in price. The gap is usually one word: plated, filled, vermeil or solid. These terms describe how much real gold you are actually buying, and they decide whether a piece lasts months or generations. Here is the honest ranking, from least gold to most.

Gold plated: the fashion tier

Gold plating bonds a whisper-thin layer of gold over a base metal, usually brass, by electroplating. How thin? Measured in microns, sometimes as little as one. A new plated piece can look exactly like solid gold, but rubbing, washing and daily wear slowly take the layer off, revealing duller metal beneath, and a base metal that is not hypoallergenic can irritate skin. Plating is barely regulated and most makers never state its thickness. Treat plated pieces as fun, seasonal experiments, not keepers.

Gold vermeil: the step up

Vermeil, pronounced ver-may, is plating with standards: the base must be genuine sterling silver, with gold layered on top, 2.5 microns being the common benchmark. That silver base makes vermeil kinder to sensitive skin and more valuable throughout, which is why it is called demi-fine. Many direct-to-consumer brands sell vermeil hoops and chains in the $100 to $200 range, often a fifth of the price of the same piece in solid gold. It still wears down eventually with water, perfume and sweat, but it holds its colour far longer than ordinary plating.

Gold filled: the quiet workhorse

Gold filled is made mechanically, bonding a thick sheet of gold to a base metal with heat and pressure. In the US the gold layer must make up at least 5 per cent of the item's total weight, which is many times more gold than plating carries. The bond resists tarnish well, and a gold filled piece can look right for years of regular wear. Note that its karat stamp refers only to the gold layer, not the whole piece.

Solid gold: the heirloom standard

Solid gold is gold all the way through, alloyed for strength. Pure 24k gold is too soft for daily wear, so fine pieces are usually 14k, about 58.5 per cent gold, or 18k, 75 per cent gold. Solid gold does not tarnish, does not wear through, and can be polished, repaired and resized for decades. It costs the most upfront and the least per year of wear, and it is the only tier that genuinely becomes an heirloom.

One more wrinkle: hallmarks. Stamps such as 14k or 18k inside a shank tell you the purity claimed, but stamping rules vary by country and dishonest stamps exist, so buy tiers from sellers you trust, not from stamps alone.

Which should you buy?

Match the tier to the job. Trend-driven experiments: plated is fine. Everyday fashion pieces on a budget: vermeil or gold filled. Anything you intend to wear daily for years, give at a milestone, or pass on: solid gold, every time. And remember the golden rule of gold shopping: if the price seems too good to be true, the piece is telling you which tier it really is.
