Is an Engagement Ring the Same as a Wedding Ring?

“No: the engagement ring marks the proposal and the wedding ring marks the marriage. The differences, whether you need both, and how they are worn together.”

No, an engagement ring and a wedding ring are not the same thing. They are two different rings, given at two different moments, with two different meanings. The short version: the engagement ring marks the proposal, and the wedding ring marks the marriage itself. Here is how they differ and how they work together.

The engagement ring

An engagement ring is given at the proposal (or chosen together around it) as a symbol of the promise to marry. It is traditionally the more elaborate of the two rings: a centre diamond or gemstone, often in a solitaire, halo or three-stone setting, designed to stand out. Because of the centre stone, it is usually the larger investment of the pair.

The tradition reaches back to ancient Rome's anulus pronubis, a simple iron betrothal ring. By the medieval period the rings had become ornate, and in 1477 Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave the first well-documented diamond engagement ring to Mary of Burgundy.

The wedding ring

The wedding ring (or wedding band) is exchanged during the wedding ceremony itself, as the symbol of the marriage vows. It is traditionally simpler: a plain band of gold or platinum, or a band set with small diamonds, designed for comfortable everyday wear. Many couples exchange two bands, one for each partner.

The key differences

| | Engagement ring | Wedding ring | | --- | --- | --- | | Given at | The proposal | The wedding ceremony | | Symbolises | The promise to marry | The marriage itself | | Typical style | Centre stone, decorative setting | Plain or pavé band | | Worn by | Traditionally one partner | Usually both partners | | Cost | Usually the larger purchase | Usually simpler and less costly |

Do you need both

Not necessarily. Many people wear both together after the wedding, stacked on the fourth finger of the left hand with the wedding band closest to the heart. But plenty choose one ring to do both jobs: an engagement ring that doubles as the wedding ring, or a simple band that serves as both. In some countries, partners wear matching bands and skip the engagement ring entirely. There is no requirement, only convention.

How they are worn together

When both are worn, the traditional arrangement is the wedding band first (nearest the palm, closest to the heart) with the engagement ring on top. Our guide to wearing an engagement ring and wedding band together covers the order, the ceremony-day switch, stacking and soldering in detail.

Buying order and budget

The engagement ring comes first in time, but it helps to think of the pair together from the start. A wedding band needs to sit comfortably against the engagement ring's setting, and matched metal keeps the pair looking intentional. Budget-wise, the engagement ring typically takes the larger share; lab-grown diamonds stretch that share further, leaving room for the bands without raising the total.
