Can You Resize a Ring? What Can and Cannot Be Resized

“Most rings can go up or down a size or two, but eternity bands, tension settings and tungsten cannot. What resizing involves, costs and when to skip it.”

A ring that once fit perfectly can stop fitting for all sorts of ordinary reasons: weight change, weather, age, or a ring that was never quite sized right to begin with. The good news is that most rings can be resized, usually by a size or two in either direction. The exceptions are specific and worth knowing before you buy or inherit a piece.

What resizing actually involves

To make a ring smaller, a goldsmith cuts a small section from the band, brings the ends together and solders the joint. To make one larger, the band is either gently stretched, for a small adjustment on plain bands, or cut and opened with a new piece of matching metal added. Done well, the joint is invisible and the ring is as strong as it was. Most jobs stay within about two sizes up or down; bigger changes risk distorting the shape and stressing the settings.

Expect a straightforward resize to cost roughly $30 to $100 depending on metal, direction and how much work the settings need. Sizing down is usually simpler; sizing up costs more because metal is added.

Rings that usually cannot be resized

Some designs rule resizing out from the start, and it is better to know this before you fall in love:

  • Full eternity bands. With stones running all the way round, there is no plain metal to cut. These can only be remade.
  • Continuous patterns or engravings. A joint would interrupt a design that circles the band. Inside engravings survive resizing, though they may need redoing.
  • Tension settings. The stone is held by the spring of the band itself; change the band and you change the forces holding the stone.
  • Titanium, tungsten and stainless steel. Too hard to cut and solder with ordinary workshop tools. The answer there is a new ring in the new size.

Rings with stones: usually yes, with care

A stone-set ring can normally be resized, but the goldsmith checks the settings first, because heat and bending can loosen stones. Sensitive gems, emerald, opal and tanzanite among them, may need to be removed before soldering and reset afterwards. That adds a little time and cost, and it is exactly the right caution.

When resizing is the wrong tool

If a ring is only slightly loose in cold weather, or only tight in summer, sizing beads or a small insert can correct the fit without cutting anything. And if a ring sits many sizes off, or the design rules out a joint, remaking the band around your stones is often cleaner than forcing a resize.

Questions to ask before you hand it over

Ask whether the metal and setting can take the resize, whether any stones need removing, how the joint will be finished, and what happens to any engraving. A good jeweller answers all four without being asked twice.

Getting the size right first time

Fingers change through the day, so measure at the end of the day when they are largest, and never when your hands are cold. A ring should slide on easily and come off with slight resistance at the knuckle. If you are between sizes, sizing up to the half size is usually the comfortable call. And if the ring is a surprise, borrowing one they already wear on the same finger beats guessing.
