Most people know birthstones by month: February is amethyst, July is ruby. But there is an older, parallel system that assigns gems to the twelve signs of the zodiac instead, and if your birthday falls near a month boundary, the two lists give you entirely different stones. Here is how zodiac birthstones work, the full chart, and how to choose between the systems.
Where zodiac stones come from
The link between gems and the signs of the zodiac is ancient, tied to old beliefs about stones holding the favour of particular stars and seasons. The month-based list most of us know is actually the younger invention: the familiar "modern" birthstone list was standardised by an American trade association in 1912 and has been extended since. Zodiac stones follow the sun signs and their date ranges rather than calendar months, which is why the two systems often disagree.
Neither list is more correct. They are different traditions, and you are allowed to pick the one whose stone you actually love.
The zodiac birthstone chart
The International Gem Society's zodiac list, using tropical sign dates, runs as follows:
| Zodiac sign | Dates | Gem | | --- | --- | --- | | Aquarius | Jan 21 - Feb 18 | Garnet | | Pisces | Feb 19 - Mar 20 | Amethyst | | Aries | Mar 21 - Apr 20 | Bloodstone | | Taurus | Apr 21 - May 20 | Sapphire | | Gemini | May 21 - Jun 21 | Agate | | Cancer | Jun 22 - Jul 22 | Emerald | | Leo | Jul 23 - Aug 23 | Onyx | | Virgo | Aug 24 - Sep 22 | Carnelian | | Libra | Sep 23 - Oct 23 | Chrysolite | | Scorpio | Oct 24 - Nov 22 | Beryl | | Sagittarius | Nov 23 - Dec 22 | Topaz | | Capricorn | Dec 23 - Jan 20 | Ruby |
A note on Libra: chrysolite is a historical name that once covered yellow-green chrysoberyl as well as peridot and prehnite. Today a jeweller will most often read it as peridot.
Month stones vs sign stones
Notice how the two systems pull apart. A late-January birthday is a garnet either way, but a Pisces born in early March wears amethyst by the zodiac and aquamarine by the month list. A Sagittarius gets topaz by the stars but turquoise or tanzanite by the modern December list. There is no committee to appease: many people own both stones and wear them for different moods.

Choosing yours
- Start with your sign's stone and look at real examples. If you love it, done.
- If you do not, check your month stone, traditional and modern. The traditional lists offer further options, and some traditional stones are kinder to a budget than their modern counterparts.
- Meaning is yours to assign. Astrological associations are tradition and story, not established fact, so choose the stone you will enjoy wearing. That is the whole point.
